International documentary Film WORKSHOP

International Documentary Film Workshop is the first bilateral exchange program established between San Francisco State University, China Shanghai Normal University and InFocus Documentary Association. The workshop will be conducted in Shanghai, China, one of the fastest growing metropolitan in the world.

Background


This cross-cultural program was created since summer 2010 and directed by Professor Weimin Zhang of San Francisco State University, the Award-Winning Filmmaker, Cinematographer, Educator, and Multimedia Artist. The uniqueness of this program is designed with the emphases on real cross-cultural experience and community team collaboration, which provided the students an unique opportunity to explore, participate and experience the different culture and the political economical environment in the real world through the medium of documentary filmmaking.
Workshop Picture
In summer 2010, there were total 12 students from SFSU including 9 undergraduate senior students and 3 graduate students, together with 12 students from Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) participated this 3-week intensive workshop from June 4-25,2010. After in-depth research and strategic selection, we decided to focus on 4 film projects and students were divided into 4 groups. Each group were consists of 6 students, 3 students of SFSU and 3 students of SHNU. They worked extremely hard and successfully presented 4 high quality short documentary films in Chinese/English. “MADE IN CHINA”, 1 of 4 documentary films was selected into the Official Selection and was screened at 2011 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF) from March 10-20, 2011.

In summer 2011, there were 4 excellent short films were made by 9 SFSU students and 11 Chinese students. The documentary film screening were presented in both Shanghai and San Francisco. BEI YAO WAN, a short film directed by Prof. Zhang's SFSU M.F.A. student Shiyan Feng, has been selected and screened at 2012 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival from March 8-18, 2012. "BEI YAO WAN" also just nominated by Festival de Cannes in France and will be screened in May 16-27, 2012.

In summer 2012, there will be 13 students from SFSU including 10 senior undergraduate and 3 graduate students, together with 12 students from SHNU, participate in this upcoming 4-week intensive documentary film workshop in Shanghai from July 9 - August 3, 2012.

Year 2012 is also going to be the first year we extend our exclusive college program to high school students. We are taking maximum 4 of them to work closely with college seniors even graduate students from both universities. It’s going to be an excellent opportunity for these high school students to not only learning in a higher academic level of Fine Art, but also learning the real cross cultural experience, collaboration, teamwork, hands on experience, even fully utilize their language advantages of speaking fluent English and Chinese, to participate and experience the different culture, to communicate properly and accurately with the locals and the American students, to produce their own production of Fine Art through the medium of documentary filmmaking.
